A
Single Spelling System
You will notice that with Cornish
there are variations in spelling; however there is a growing desire within
the Cornish Language community for a single spelling. Click Here to sign a petition for a new
compromise form.
Or, alternatively if you believe
that Kemmyn should be the standard there is another petition available here.
Currently the Cornish language
Board and the Language Fellowship recommend Common Cornish, devised by Ken
George in the 1980’s based on extensive research. This form is the most
widely used within the language community and has the most publications in
print. Unified, the earlier standard spelling system has in many cases been
replaced by Unified Cornish Revised; a form devised by Nicholas Williams a
Celtic Scholar based upon his research. This spelling is based on the
original mediaeval texts, whereas the Common Cornish spelling places emphasis
on the traditional pronunciation of Cornish. This system is easier to learn
and has now been used for an entire generation. It can be argues that
Kemmyn, through it’s increased use as become the de facto standard.
Cornish Language Development
Manager
Grade K £27,759 – £33,984 p.a.
Ref: 1415
The development of the Cornish language is on a threshold. Following its
recognition by the UK Government in 2002 as a minority or regional
language, the language users and local government in Cornwall have
published a strategy for its development. We are looking for an effective
manager to facilitate the development of the Cornish language in line with
the strategy. You will have a degree and experience of successful project
management, and will be able to enthuse and engage with people from the
voluntary, public and private sectors. The Manager will be responsible to
the newly-created Cornish Language Partnership, and supported by the County
Council. You will be based at County Hall, Truro. The post
has funding from the European Commission, the UK Government and Cornwall
County Council until June 2008. However, this is seen as only the first
stage of funding and, depending on its success, it is hoped that the
project will be secured for the future. For an informal discussion about
the post please contact John Sawle on 01872
322102 or email: jsawle@cornwall.gov.uk
. An application form and further details can be obtained from Chief
Executive’s Department, County Hall, Truro TR1 3AY, tel:

Closing date: 28
